The value and role of poetry is ever important in today’s world. Poetry is a special part of human spirituality. It becomes a bridge to open our souls, to build peace and to foster of awareness of individual and societal values, in a world of different languages and cultures.

The history of the World Congress of Poets is such a bridge, of which we and the rich history of poets which came before us can be proud

I am happy to note that 300 poets from 50 countries gathered in Mongolia for the Congress in 2006.

Let us shed more light on the shadowy side of the human soul by magical, sensitive and great energy of Poetry!

István Turczi – 3rd Vice President

Trying to define poetry is probably a useless enterprise. Most famous poets have written about it. For Wordsworth, England, it was a matter of the „overflow of powerful feelings and emotions recollected in tranquility”, whereas for Shelley poets were the „unacknowledged legislators of the world”. Coleridge was perharps the most ambitious in asserting that in writing poetry the human mind imitates the divine mind in a god-like act of creation. My own attempt at getting at the essence of poetry will be more humble: poetry is the creation of meaningful beauty by means of words, which thus both create and express who or what we are.

There are no limits as to the subject matter of poetry. Whatever our human hearts and minds can contemplate or brood over or entertain is FAIR GAME. Fair game from the first ancient songs of Bible till our coming Congress in the Holy Land. And this is a joint liability, this is our real risk to be taken.

I join my fellow officers and members of the World Academy of Arts and Culture and the World Congress of Poets in celebrating the power of poetry and poets to support peace in a world that grows more dangerously complex every day, a world which can benefit from the ability of poetry to slow us down and make us reflect on the matters that are important to life.

The question of the nature of poetry is a good place to begin to appreciate and accept one another. I believe this acceptance is essential to understanding how poetry can work toward peace.

As an organization the way we behave toward one another is of central importance.  If we are true to this principle, we are true in the way we appear in the countries where we convene.  In working for peace as poets, we must challenge our own ambitions.

We come together to give to one another and leave lasting impressions in the countries where we convene, understanding that true generosity is unconditional love, a higher kind of poetry.

Poetry is a Goddess as well as a ghost. As a goddess, she makes me love her. As a ghost, she makes me hate her. When I love her, I devote my time, energy and soul to her without thinking of her reward; when I hate her, she devours my blood, heart and spirit without thinking of my revenge. Poetry is my destination and even predestination.

With the globalization, poets from different parts of the world and different sorts of languages should communicate more than before. WAAC would like to be a rainbow for such a communication and I'd like to be a part of it.

Maria E. Soberanis, Board member

Dear brothers and sisters through poetry, it is my pleasure to address you these words to welcome you to the heart of the poets included in this wonderful book. The only way for human understanding is the one that comes and goes from heart to heart, which is the place where the truth lives, the most pure fountain untouched by selfishness; of feelings and emotions. The act of writing poetry requires a honest introspection that makes it urgent to express, as the poet´s heart   can capture the essence of a flower, he is not interested in knowing the process of its blooming as the scientist does, its “why” and its “for what” as the philosopher does, he just fall in love with it. So I ask you to receive that precious treasure that becomes directly from the poet´s soul.

That is why in this book you will also find the story of a group of daring and dreaming poets that have the courage to start this enormous crusade of getting brotherhood and understanding through poetry, and they have persevere in their task gathering poets from all over the world every year during 32 World Congresses of Poets, as it is this year in Israel. Welcome to our dream!
